Option #2:

Residential Placement (Youth Boot Camps, Wilderness Programs, Troubled Teen Boarding Schools, RTC's) - This link leads to a FREE TEEN HELP form for free placement assistance in reputable residential programs.

Free Trial?
None (Costs between $3,800 and $19,000 per Month, for 9-18 Months)

Guarantee:
None

Intervention Level:
Residential (out-of-home)

Parental Involvement:
Minimal (Parents are often referred to as THE CAUSE of the troubled teen's problems - In such youth boot camps very little respect is held for the value of parental involvement in the intervention process - This is precisely the opposite of The Total Transformation Program, wherein the parent's strength is critical to the troubled teen's recovery)

Long-Term Effectiveness:
Youth Boot Camps are often translated into an extended punishing event that can permanently fracture family relationships; Solutions created in youth boot camps, where the dynamics of true family and social life are not present, have an unreliable track record for permanent recovery; Cost analysis shows no guarantee of success for maximum financial investment; Little or no investment of parental time and effort except for periodic phone calls, planned parent visits, and (depending upon the program) occasional family therapy via telephone

Option Comparison:

Absent there being a real and present danger to self, others, or property, The Total Transformation Program is the better option. However, even if Residential Placement (including Youth Boot Camps) is necessary The Total Transformation Program should ALSO be implemented in the home environment to prepare the parents for the troubled teenager's return home.
Effective management of post-intervention teenagers in the home environment is critical to long-term success.

Does Your Child Need a Youth Boot Camp?

It is understandable for parents to feel that a defiant or unruly teen needs a youth boot camp to "straighten him/her out." The problem is that the motivation is often based upon feelings of frustration or anger. A calm, logical approach to the troubled teen's issues, however, reveal that youth boot camps rarely produce the long-term results parents are really seeking.

Instead youth boot camps do more to satisfy the parent's emotions than they do to "white-wash" a teen's mind and values. In fact, the illusion of turning in a defective teen hoping to get back a fixed teen is an illusion conveyed by the media and by marketers in the youth boot camps industry. It's not real. Read below to see why we at InsightPros NEVER refer parents to youth boot camps.

Thousands of families throughout the country have felt that the best way to get troubled youth back on track is to send them to youth boot camps. The idea is to both "straighten them out" and to legally punish them as fiercely possible. However, unreported in both the media and from these programs is the fact that there is very little statistical evidence that youth boot camps have a long-term impact on the success of the child. In fact, there is mounting evidence that they are both ineffective and in many cases detrimental.

But there are other options to youth boot camps. InsightPros is here to help.

What are Youth Boot Camps?

Youth boot camps are punitive correctional programs that maintain a military-style environment to "break down and rebuild" the character of troubled teens. These programs typically emphasize discipline and physical conditioning. They were originally developed as a rigorous alternative to longer terms of confinement in youth corrections. Many, but not all, of these programs are followed by a period of probation or some form of aftercare. Youth boot camps are generally restricted to non-violent or first-time offenders.

The idea of "shock incarceration" as a tough, low-cost alternative to more intensive programming brought about the establishment of military-style youth boot camps.

Are Youth Boot Camps Effective? Experts agree that a confrontational approach to teen problems is often inappropriate. Most correctional and military experts agree that a confrontational model, employing tactics of intimidation and humiliation, is counterproductive for most troubled youth. The use of this kind of model has led to disturbing incidents of abuse. For teens with emotional, behavioral, or learning problems, degrading tactics may be particularly inappropriate and potentially damaging. The bullying style and aggressive interactions that characterize youth boot camps fail to model the pro-social behavior and development of empathy that struggling youth really need to learn.

Positive changes demonstrated while in youth boot camps may not last when a youth returns to his community. Many teens have reported that the program is helpful to them and they feel more positive about their futures. It is unclear, however, whether these attitudes persist after students leave the youth boot camp, or whether they are related to actual changes in behavior once the youth returns to his community. Without significant therapeutic intervention while in the program, as well as specialized aftercare following release, youth boot camps have been consistently unsuccessful in "changing" troubled youth.

What are the alternatives to youth boot camps? Youth who need some form of treatment care require an individualized approach that takes their strengths and needs into account. Programs and policies should be family-centered, including the family in all decision making about a youth, as well as culturally and developmentally appropriate. Research has shown that small, family-centered programs are more effective than youth boot camps at instilling long-term change.

Act Now .... But Act Wisely

Are you familiar with all of the intervention options - beyond youth boot camps - to help your child? How are you going to know what your son/daughter needs? InsightPros may have treatment options that can help.

Beyond youth boot camps, what kinds of treatment will build the life changing self-esteem and confidence that your son/daughter needs to be successful for the long run?

A major problem facing kids who struggle with the issues listed above is low self-esteem or feelings of worthlessness.

Many, if not all, of your son's/daughter's destructive behaviors could merely be symptoms of this one core problem.

Be certain that the intervention you choose builds, rather than destroys his/her self esteem, instilling life-long positive change by dealing with the core issues.

An abusive or overly restrictive setting may not build the confidence and self-esteem your child needs.

If your child exits a youth boot camp with the same low self-image that he/she entered with, then he/she will continue to engage in the negative behaviors that validate his/her self image.

Many parents choose to pursue interventions that address the symptoms only. Attacking the symptoms will drive the destructive behaviors underground - only to resurface at a later date. This approach wastes valuable time and resources and may even make things worse.
