Adoption Issues & Parenting Troubled Teens

Parenting awareness: A troubled teen may be suffering from adoption issues if he/she is withdrawn from others, is daydreaming in school, or displays shifts in academic performance (falling grades, not completing homework assignments). Often teens struggling with adoption issues have angry outbursts, temper tantrums, show aggressiveness with siblings, peers, or adults. They may also experience anxiety, fearfulness, difficulty being away from parents, and may struggle with changes in eating or sleeping habits.

Among the most difficult issues for adoptive parents is the fact that their troubled teen may be merely displaying symptoms of deeper, more important problems. Yet the need to address inappropriate behavior (the symptoms) increasingly burries the core issues beneath deeper and deeper conflicts.

Sadly, the teen may be experiencing attachment problems, grief/loss issues, etc., and may truly be in need of therapeutic help. At this critical time, when the teen's behaviors may seem to be crying for swift and absolute punishment, Michael Behning (through his Strong Model Workshops) counsels patience and proper, therapeutic intervention.

Your greatest ally in such a situation, beyond the members of your family, is a good family therapist who specializes in adoption issues, as well as grief/loss and attachment disorder. He/she can assist in diagnosing and effectively helping your troubled teen. You may also find support and insight from workshops and support groups, many of which are free, through services such as those found with InsightPros.

InsightPros' workshops and seminars provide insight into a powerful form of interaction and intervention that is far more appropriate for teens struggling with adoption issues than traditional "consequence and reward" based parenting. InsightPros helps parents discover new and unique ways to work with their troubled teens.

If possible, the Strong Model workshops (and other resources on InsightPros) will help you avert sending your child away due to the symptoms of teen adoption issues. In addition, your insight and experience with adoption issues would be a welcome contribution to InsightPros' workshops and forums. Your background and the expertise of our facilitators in working with parents and teens would bring added value to you, as well as fellow participants.
