Adoption Issues & Parenting Troubled Teens

Parenting awareness: A troubled teen may be suffering from adoption issues if he/she is withdrawn from others, is daydreaming in school, or displays shifts in academic performance (falling grades, not completing homework assignments). Often teens struggling with adoption issues have angry outbursts, temper tantrums, show aggressiveness with siblings, peers, or adults. They may also experience anxiety, fearfulness, difficulty being away from parents, and may struggle with changes in eating or sleeping habits.

Among the most difficult issues for adoptive parents is the fact that their troubled teen may be merely displaying symptoms of deeper, more important problems. Yet the need to address inappropriate behavior (the symptoms) increasingly burries the core issues beneath deeper and deeper conflicts.

Sadly, the teen may be experiencing attachment problems, grief/loss issues, etc., and may truly be in need of therapeutic help. At this critical time, when the teen's behaviors may seem to be crying for swift and absolute punishment, Michael Behning (through his Strong Model Workshops) counsels patience and proper, therapeutic intervention.

Your greatest ally in such a situation, beyond the members of your family, is a good family therapist who specializes in adoption issues, as well as grief/loss and attachment disorder.
