What should you look for in a Residential Treatment Center?

Academic, Therapeutic, Vocational, and Residential living services

Therapy provided by licensed therapists

Residential care is provided by staff members with (or near completion of) 4-year degrees or equivalent residential treatment care experience; all residential staff members are either certified, or are in training for various levels of emergency medical certification

Regularly scheduled weekends for parent/child support and training

In addition to therapeutic contacts, regularly scheduled, weekly home contacts via phone or online personal calls (as appropriate)

Ongoing support of the family at home through support of extended treatment services through licensed therapists

Students are actively taught self-management, care, and discipline, and are actively assisted in generalizing these patterns and skills to their aftercare success in their local community

Clients Served:  Normally, residential treatment centers accept troubled teens, ages 13-17, though there are some for younger students. Enrollment is open to students who meet medical, social, psychological, aptitude, and legal standards. These standards ensure their ability to progress in the residential program, and enforces safety standards for staff and students.

The family is strongly encouraged to have a licensed therapist at home working with the child/family at, or soon after the time of placement. It is preferred that this therapist agree to participate via conference calls in regular treatment team meetings, and to assist, when possible, with therapeutic conference calls with parents. It is preferred that prior to placement, the therapist be in agreement with admission.

Duration:  Generally, InsightPros recommends 9-months, maximum (at 9-month anniversary students either discharge or graduate, unless extended placement is agreed-upon by treatment team as necessary and beneficial.) Depending upon your troubled teen's issues treatment can, of course be longer. However, the sooner a teen can have the opportunity to generalize the skills learned in residential treatment the better. It is often difficult to determine exactly when such generalization is possible. This is why a strong team, at home, as well as in the residential treatment center, is necessary
