Parent Help for Teens Struggling with Divorce

A troubled teen's struggle with divorce may lead to unforseen emotional and behavioral problems as he/she faces events that seem beyond his/her control. Friends and family around these teens may not understand or recognize the pain and confusion they're experiencing. Often these teens want to heal a situation over which they have no control. The experience is intensified when abuse or neglect is present. We're here to help the parents, families, and others who care about these struggling teens to find hope and strength. Review our resources.

When teens' internal struggles with divorce result in behavioral symptoms of their pain, they may need helpful, caring intervention. Remember, the purpose of intervention on teens struggling with divorce issues is to help, rather than to punish or push them away. So, although intervention is always firm, it should also always show greater care and concern. Does your teen exhibit any of the following behaviors? Follow the Steps on the right.

From free services to complete intervention, vast resources are provided through the Steps found on this page (teen help, above right).*

In our work with teens struggling with divorce, and parents trying to work with the unpredictable array of emotions and behaviors displayed by them, we have discovered that parents are too often so stressed by their children's behaviors (or symptoms) that they feel unable to address the root of the problems.

We recommend both therapy and an alternative approach to parenting, especially prior to employing overly aggressive authoritative intervention (incarceration or enrollment in a residential treatment program), unless the troubled teen's issues are so severe that such intervention is deemed necessary by you (the parents) and a therapeutic professional.

Unless safety and security is an issue, we normally recommend a graduated plan of intervention that begins with the home, employing tools such as The Total Transformation Program®,then extends, as needed, to therapy, community, and out-of-home care. This Non-Impulsive approach is important when coping with divorce.

In addition to our Strong Model Workshops and Coaching Services, we use this site to maximize the amount of information you can obtain on divorce issues associated with troubled teens.

Note: Many of the entertaining and inspiring Workshops and Coaching Services found on InsightPros provide specific methods and approaches parents should use when working with teens struggling with the emotions and associated problems of divorce.

Divorce Issues - Parenting Help for Troubled Teens and Children

Parenting Awareness: Signs that troubled teens are having difficulty coping with divorce include acting younger than their age, fear of being away from parent(s), moodiness, acting out, manipulation, sadness and depression, guilt, sleep or eating problems, changes in personality, academic and peer problems, irrational fears and compulsive behavior.

It is notable that many of these symptoms mirror depression and related disorders. However, even more difficult is the fact that the underlying problems associated with such symptoms are often undetected. Therefore, the more parents try to contain the "symptoms," the more the root problem eludes solution.

Many divorcees have attended InsightPros' Strong Model workshops seeking assistance in helping their troubled teens.

The Strong Model of Interaction and Intervention, upon which many of these workshops are based, has its origin in Systems Theory, which happens to be a core theoretical base for Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). We, therefore, recommend (in a general sense) such therapists to those who seek the insight of these workshops.

Of course, we welcome your presence in the workshops of the InsightPros. The background and insight of our facilitators regarding divorce issues is substantial, and we eagerly respond to the questions and struggles of those who seek our help.
