Not all therapists are alike. The ReFraming Parenting Program is based upon principles
that work extremely well with therapists who have training and experience
in family and relationship issues. We suggest you look for a Licensed Marriage
and Family Therapist (LMFT). An exceptional site through which you can search
for a therapist in your area is www.therapistlocator.net. Parenting: Managing Relationships & Anxiety with Troubled Teens & Children |
The ReFraming Parenting Program |
Families, Unity, Achievement |
Can you change his behavior over the long-run |
without helping him to change himself? |
Focus on the Student's Issues, and the Parent-Student Relationship From the beginning of the program to the end, the students are carefully though consistently challenged to be strong and mature enough to contribute to their own solutions. ALL of the techniques used by SIM trainers serve as real-life examples of the techniques parents learn in ReFraming Families. SIM trainers also engage in a consistent campaign to ensure that the students see their parents as having made a choice to help them, rather than control them. Nonetheless, the role of the parents as a strong, caring authority figure is clearly established. Moreover, students "buy-in" to the importance of the "authority level" (as covered in the ReFraming Model). Yet an understanding of their power and responsibility as individuals is constantly emphasized. Troubled teens often believe that defiance of authority displays strength. This is especially prevalent in situations where a negative peer group is involved, and the student actually becomes the "hero" of inappropriate peers. The ReFraming Parenting Program works to reverse such thinking errors. Successful, students begin to clearly see that their previous perceptions of strength are, in fact, clear displays of weakness and immaturity. Again, students are challenged to progress, rather than forced to comply. The pursuit of solutions is seen as a virtue, and the earning of imposed consequences reflects weakness. The program's objective is to help students see value-based performance as the solution to their problems, and recognize that working with parents, rather than against them, provides personal rewards worth pursuing. |
ReFraming Unity: Enlisting the Student ReFraming Unity is a component of the ReFraming Parenting Program that should be attended by 1-2 parents, and not more than two children. The primary intent of ReFraming Unity is to enlist the troubled teen or young adult in the at-home phase of the treatment process. During ReFraming Unity teens are provided with a clear understanding of ReFraming concepts. The training style moves the students through a process in which they identify issues of weakness, and conflict with personal values. This is then related to their individual situations, in which their own "thinking errors" have caused them to harm themselves and others. |
Parent Involvement & Joint Plans for the Future Parents are encouraged to watch and listen very closely as the dynamics of change take place among the students. They rise from simple responses, to active interaction, then ultimately to a pursuit of achievement. They are divided into peer groups, and are provided with role plays that serve to enhance their understanding of their own strength. Their interactions with staff change from quiet suspicion to active involvement in issues that are meaningful to them. At the level of achievement they actually engage in active problem solving with their parents. Students are provided with insight into crisis-related problems. They are challenged to look honestly at themselves to determine where their weaknesses lie, and to recognize how these recurrent issues are harmful to themselves and others. This empowers them to work with their parents to create lasting solutions. Vocational and academic scholarship opportunities are covered, and students are provided with renewed hope that whatever had gone wrong previously, can now be fully overcome. ReFraming Unity challenges students to develop and implement a positive, life-changing plan. Note: The stand-alone price of the ReFraming Parenting Program (separate from Insight Technical Academy), which includes ReFraming Families, Unity, and Achievement is $9,750. |
